Sometimes it takes years until your kindness will pay off.
Sometimes you never see the fruits of your labors, but
they are there, deep inside the soul of the one you touched."

THREE EXCITING RIDES IN TWO YEARS

On January 6 Bob Kramer, a speaker friend who lives in Ohio but owns a condo in Sarasota, asked Barbara to be his co-pilot on a motorcycle ride for charity in Sarasota called "Thunder on the Bay." Although the only time Barbara had ever been on a Harley was on a six block ride with Ray Perez several years ago, she decided it was an "adventure!" At the end of the 77 mile ride, what is called a "Poker Run," she could still get her leg over the end of the bike to get off which amazed her friend, Bob! Having ridden a camel in Egypt in December and an elephant in Thailand a year ago in May, Barbara has now accomplished another extraordinary feat-- an elephant, a camel, AND a ride on a Harley.......and she would joyfully do it all over again! ;-)

(Boise, ID) January 18, 2008 - Barbara Glanz, whose motto is "Spreading Contagious EnthusiasmTM," is out to change the corporate world, one person at a time. "Even though your work may not always be joyful, you can still create an atmosphere of caring, creativity and joy," says Glanz, a fireball who has spoken at events with some of the most successful CEOs and authors in the country, including authors Rick Warren ("The Purpose-Driven Life"), Ken Blanchard ("One Minute Manager"), Former Chief Operating Officer Don Soderquist of Wal-Mart. Lou Holtz and CEO Dan Cathy of Chick-fil-A.

Her work as an author, philosopher and motivational speaker has taken her to seven continents and all 50 states. Barbara's partnership with iQuestions.com brings her wisdom and experience to the world, via HD video 24/7.

"A joyful workplace may not be at the top of a CEO's list," stated Glanz. "But it should be. It improves motivation, retention and productivity. It's directly related to the bottom line."

Studies show that only about 15% of U.S. workers give their best to their employer; another 10% are burned out, Glanz says. "What would happen if the 75% to 80% who are left were excited and inspired to give their very best to your company?" she asks.

Glanz answers questions such as:
* I tend to let others influence how I behave at work. How can I take control?
* How can I improve communication in my workplace?
* How can I get my life back in balance?
* What are some ways to create a healthy work environment?

In her answer to the question: "What difference can I make if I am only a frontline worker?", Barbara briefly shares the story of "Johnny the Bagger"TM and the difference one person can make. The DVD "Johnny the Bagger"TM and book "The Simple Truths of Service", co-written by Ken Blanchard and Barbara Glanz, has touched millions of lives.

Barbara's Trip to Egypt
On November 30 I flew from Sarasota to Newark where I met Barbara Sadek, a good friend and the Director of Education for the Society for Human Resource Management, and together we flew on to Cairo, Egypt. We were met at the airport by representatives of Emeco Travel, and I cannot say enough about what wonderful care they took of us through our entire trip, including getting our Visas, handling our bags, and providing drivers and guides for us wherever we went. I would highly recommend this service to anyone traveling to Egypt!

You can read the entire journal of our trip at www.barbaraglanz.com/blog. However, the highlights included touring the Egyptian Museum, taking a Coptic Christian tour which included a visit to "Garbage City," staying at the famous Mena House where the treaty to end WWII was signed, and of course, seeing the Pyramids and the Sphinx in Cairo. (One of the funniest things that happened at the Pyramids was that whenever the hawkers found out we were from America, they would all shout, "Hi, Ho, Silver!" We laughed because the young people today would not even know the Lone Ranger!) We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Hotel which had a spectacular view of the Nile River, beautiful at a distance though terribly polluted. The Egyptian people were extremely friendly and all welcomed us warmly, although at the same time trying to sell us something wherever we happened to be!

We loved the bazaars and the wonderful shopping, the food, and the culture of Cairo. A five day cruise down the Nile took us to Luxor, several famous temples, and the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. Exploring the tombs and seeing all the paintings that were 5000 years old and looked as if they had just been done was simply amazing. It was astounding to see how advanced the Egyptian culture was in the arts and science (the mummification process was incredibly advanced and they created medical instruments that we still use today). We could not help thinking how our civilization today might be different if Antony and Cleopatra had won the war instead of the Romans!

The highlight of the travel part of the trip for both of us was the trip to Mt .Sinai. We flew to Sharm-el-sheik, which is a diving and resort area of Egypt on the Red Sea, and then drove through the desert to the mountain. It was interesting that the government requires that you drive with an armed guard through this area, but never once on the whole trip did we ever experience any concerns about safety. We climbed only partway up Mt. Sinai because we did not have warm enough clothing; however, we saw the Burning Bush and Moses' well at St. Catherine's Monastery at the foot of the mountain. We also rode a camel while we were there which was amazingly comfortable! Just being where Moses walked and driving though the area where the Israelites wandered for 40 years really made Biblical history come alive in a new way.

Of course the real reason for me to be in Cairo was to speak to several groups, the most important one being the American Chamber of Commerce. Over 200 managers attended from over 100 different companies, and they were a delightful audience. I spoke on "Motivating and Retaining Employees" in the morning, focusing on the Internal customer and how to create an environment where people want to give their best and in the afternoon on "Building Customer Loyalty" which then focused on how to extend that same caring, creative spirit to the External customer. Several of the organizations in attendance have already asked me to come back in the fall to speak to their companies. Another evening I spoke to all the managers of Emeco Travel, and later in the week to the staff of the American Chamber. Each audience was attentive and enthusiastic about ways they could differentiate themselves and give their customers, both internal and external, extraordinary service. On the final night in Cairo I was invited to dinner in an Egyptian home which was a wonderful treat. I feel that I now have many new friends in this country of historical wonder.

I returned to Sarasota on December 16 and left 4 days later to spend a week in Portland, Oregon, with my children for the holidays. I have attached two pictures in this newsletter of our "Egypt Night" when I gave them the gifts I had brought them from my trip. As you can see, we had lots of fun! If any of you are interested in this trip, it was one of the highlights of my travel adventures, and I would highly recommend it. Over one third of all the antiquities in the world reside in this beautiful country, and it is mind boggling to experience firsthand the history of our world.

Idea of the Month--Start a Mastermind Group
Start a Mastermind Group

I just returned from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where I met with my Mastermind group for three and a half days. It was one of the most wonderful group experiences I have had for a long time, both for my business and for my spirit!

Many people have asked what a Mastermind group is, and although every one is different, they all have certain characteristics. They are usually made up of a diverse group of people who have some COMMON GOAL. In our case, we are all professional speakers although we each have different family situations and different strengths and focuses in our individual businesses. We have come together, however, with an even more important goal - we are all Christians and have a deep sense of servanthood. We are very clear that God is our CEO and that even though we work very hard, our talents are His gifts to us, and we are simply His messengers.

We came from Illinois and Florida to meet in one of our member's new homes, to share her joy, and to continue a bond that has been an anchor for us all. One of the keys to a Mastermind group is TRUST. We each chose to be open, honest, and vulnerable, and the weekend proved to be a deeply significant learning experience for us all as we shared our goals, business plans, and project ideas, as well as our personal and spiritual needs.

For the group to be successful, it is also vital that whatever is discussed and shared is confidential. Never have I felt as comfortable sharing my own shortcomings, doubts, and concerns with other people as I have with this group of people whom I have grown to love as family. One of my most important learnings over the years has been that we do not love people for their strengths. We admire those strengths, yet what makes us truly love someone is when they share their weaknesses. That means that they are human, just like us!

Another thing that is important is ACCCOUNTABILITY, so as we left, we each committed to complete certain tasks before our next conference call in a month, and while we are mostly encouragers of one another, we also hold one another accountable in gentle ways.

And finally, no meeting would be complete without FUN. One of the very best stress relievers is laughter, and we had lots of that - from my encouraging an adventuresome detour on our walk (which took us about two miles out of our way!) to some inside jokes about things like recycling, assistant issues, and different circadian rhythms!

If you do not have a Mastermind group in your life, I would encourage you to start one. Think about people with a similar goal, whether it be parenting, a career focus, a hobby or interest, or a spiritual goal. Start small and set norms for your group. We have decided, for instance, that if we set a meeting time several months in advance, our first priority, even if it means turning down business, is to attend that meeting. Talk about the foundations for your group such as trust, honesty, and accountability. Then as you form deeper and deeper levels of trust and sharing, you will experience incredible learning and growth as well as a deep love for the members of your group. What a precious gift that can be in your life as it has become in mine!
