This trip was the adventure of a lifetime! A longtime friend from Chicago, Nancy Cobb, came with me on this excursion (NOT a cruise, but truly an excursion!) from January 10 - 28. We flew to Buenos Aires and had three days there to shop (leather is AMAZING there!), enjoy the beef and Malbec wine, and walk all over this beautiful city. We attended an outdoor "Opera Pampas" which combined music, dancing, and horsemanship to tell the history of Argentina, we toured various areas of the city, including the cemetery where Evita is buried, and we explored outdoor markets with unusal handmade goods.
Some interesting things we learned about Argentina were that education is compulsory through university AND paid for by the government, everyone is required by law to vote, and the literacy rate is about 98%. On the fourth day we joined the tour and ended that evening with a spectacular Tango show. (I am determined to take some lessons now ;-)
The next day we flew to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in South America, in Patagonia, where we explored Tierra del Fuego national park. That night we stayed at a lovely hotel built above the city on the side of a glacier. About midnight we heard screams, "Fire, fire!" and discovered the hallway was filled with smoke. We all got out and no one was hurt although we were VERY cold standing outside for a couple of hours. Interestingly, there was no sprinkler system, alarm system or even fire doors.
The next day we boarded our ship, the LMS le Diamante, and began our journey across the Drake Passage. Unfortunately, the Captain told us it was the worst crossing he had had in 30 years -- 30-90 foot waves so hardly anyone left their cabins for two days and many people were very sick. They lost 40% of the china on the ship and things were flying everywhere, so it was not a good beginning!
However, from then on, the trip was spectacular. The pristine, untouched beauty of the scenery cannot be described in words. We never saw another ship, plane, or person which is especially amazing in our world of wall-to-wall people! We made nine zodiac landings on various islands and finally the actual continent of Antarctica itself. We saw adele, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins feeding their young and toddling down to the water, just like "March of the Penguins!" We came upon lion and fur seals on the beach, whales and birds, and we climbed glaciers, rocks, and even swam in the hot springs on Deception Island.
Although Antarctica is not owned by any country, there are international treaties, one of which only allows 50 people at a time on the land, so since there were 200 people on our ship, we went out in groups of 50, eight persons to a zodiac. We laughed that it was as much work to get on all our gear to go out as it was to hike the land! (You can read much more about all this on my blog, www.barbaraglanz.com/blog.)
The biggest thrill for me was getting to actually speak on the continent of Antarctica. We landed at Neko Harbor and I gave a short talk on "Spreading Contagious Enthusiasm" to the folks on the ship with the glaciers in the background, the penguins all around me, and the sea in front filled with icebergs. As far as we can tell, I am now the FIRST SPEAKER on record to speak on all seven continents!
After nine wonderful days at sea, we returned to Cape Horn for a champagne celebration around the ship's pool, and then flew back to Buenos Aires where we boarded another small plane and headed to Iguazzu Falls, the largest falls in the world. As a result, we went from freezing cold Antarctica to the middle of the Rain Forest where it was 98 degrees and 100% humidity in just two days! We hiked to the bottom of these spectacular falls on the Argentine side one day and on the Brazilian side the next, an experience we will never forget.
After three days there, we flew back to BA and then home via Washington, DC. Our amazing journey convinced us of the dangers of Global Warming for our world and especially for the continent of Antarctica, and we are now advocates of saving any energy possible and stopping pollution to save this beautiful, untouched land. How BLESSED we both felt to experience God's amazing creation at the "end of the earth!"

Simple Truth #4 BE CREATIVE

"Lord, help me to remain childlike in my appreciation for life. Please slow me down...that I may always see the extraordinary in the ordinary."

How do you appreciate others around you? Get your creative juices going to determine some unusual, attention-getting, delightful ways you can thank others in your life. Consider special post-it notes to leave, affirming stickers, handwritten notes of any kind, bringing a picnic lunch to share with someone, and of course, any kind of treats.
A friend recently sent a business colleague and internal customer the following huge 3-D "treat" card with each of the candies glued onto a poster board amidst the words:
You are CERTStainly a LIFESAVER and worth $100,000 to us! Sometimes life is a ROCKY ROAD but BAR NONE you are always MOUNDS of JOY, laughs, and SNICKERS! You are a BOUNTY of fun, very CAREFREE, and EXTRA special. SKOR big and count down to PAYDAY. Best wishes, hugs, and KISSES!
My friend, Dick Bruso, from Denver, Colorado, tells of a wonderfully creative way he discovered of appreciating his precious wife:
"A couple of years ago, shortly before Father's Day, Jenny, one of my four grown daughters asked me what I wanted for Father's Day, since 'Dads are hard to buy for!' For once, I had an immediate answer. Earlier that month, my wife, Joann, and I had visited an upscale women's clothing store where my youngest daughter, Joy, was working as a sales associate. For the fun of it, my wife decided to try on some expensive outfits, including a beautiful brown and gold silk dress that looked absolutely fabulous on her.
Although I could see how much she liked it, we both realized it was a lot more than we could afford. Thus, when my daughter asked me what I wanted for Father's Day, I suggested that all my daughters consider pooling their resources in order to buy 'me' that dress for Father's Day. And that's exactly what they did!
When our family gathered together on Father's Day to celebrate, my four daughters (Julie-ann, Jackie, Jenny, and Joy) presented me with my gift, wrapped, of course, in a manly looking gift-box. When I opened it, much to my wife's absolute surprise and delight, there was that special dress she so desired.
Since then, I have had the pleasure on numerous occasions of seeing my lovely wife light up a room wearing my favorite Father's Day gift. What a blessing it has been and what a special way to show my appreciation for her love and caring for all these years!"
What a creative way to appreciate someone ˆ by asking for something for someone you love rather than for yourself on YOUR special day.

GUIDEPOSTS NATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD
Barbara is honored to be asked to consider being a part of the National Advisory Board of Guideposts. Norman Vincent Peale started this organization many years ago to reach people worldwide with a message of hope. She will be attending her first meeting in Newport Beach, CA, in March. One of the highlights will be to attend worship at the Crystal Cathedral and to meet Dr. Robert Schuller.
FIRST SPEAKER ON RECORD TO SPEAK ON ALL SEVEN CONTINENTS
As mentioned earlier in this newsletter, as far as we can tell, Barbara is the first speaker to speak on all seven continents as a result of her journey to Antarctica in January. The venue was quite different from her other speaking engagements, surrounded by penguins and glaciers; however, her message of inspiration was still gratefully received by her audience of travelers!
BARBARA NOMINATED FOR THE SPEAKER HALL OF FAME
Barbara is thrilled to be nominated for the designation of CPAE, Council of Peers Award of Excellence, which is given by the National Speakers Association in July. Only five people are selected for the Speaker Hall of Fame each year, so it is a great honor to even be nominated.
CHANGES IN PERSONNEL
In January Barbara's assistant, Suzanne, decided to take another job, so please have patience as Barbara explores ways to make client's experiences even better by partnering with some other speakers and vendors.
