QUOTATIONS OF THE MONTH
Integrate what you believe into every single area of your life. Take your heart to work and ask the most and best of everybody else, too.

- Meryl Streep -

I don't like that man. I'm going to have to get to know him better.

- Abraham Lincoln -

One must not always think so much about what one should do but rather what one should be. Our works do not ennoble us, but we must ennoble our works.

- Meister Eckhart -

Hope looks beyond the shadows of today into the sunshine of tomorrow.
"Let us walk in the light of the Lord."

- Isaiah 2:5 -

Work for the joy of it, not just for the money. Always love for the sake of it, not fearing the pain. Give your best! Do your best! Be your best! And if there is ever a day or time when you cannot figure out what to do, throw your hands in the air and dance! God's angels are your partners.

- Iyanla Vanzant -

Never let yesterday use up too much of today.

- Bob Danzig, -
"Vitamins for the Spirit"

May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you were meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilties that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received,
And pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content knowing you are a child of God.....
Let this Presence settle into your bones,
And allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

CURRENT NEWS
HOPE FOR US ALL!

Barbara Glanz, CSP, has some exciting news to share to encourage all of you to be persistent and to believe in your strengths. She started her company in 1995 and since then, she has spoken on 6 continents and in all 50 states with no marketing except her speaking engagements, website and books. Even though she has had a couple of lean years businesswise and several great personal crises including a move across the country and the loss of her husband and son as well as a very ill daughter, she has continued to be blessed to be the messenger of "Spreading Contagious EnthusiasmTM" and new hope for many. In the next few months here is where she will be speaking internationally:

August - Ireland
September - Singapore
November - Egypt
January - Antartica
With this presentation, while cruising the waters of Antarctica, Barbara will be the first speaker in the world we can find who has spoken on ALL SEVEN CONTINENTS!

Also, this year she will have four books published with major publishers, and Vision Point in Des Moines, Iowa, is producing a DVD-based training program titled "The Story of Johnny" based on her most famous signature story. The following books will be available from July to January:

"180 Ways to Spread Contagious Enthusiasm"
"The Simple Truths of Appreciation"
"CARE Packages for your Customers - An Idea a Week for Customer Service"
"What Can I Do? Ideas to Help Those Who Have Experienced Loss"

She just found out that McDonalds ordered a copy of her most recent book, "The Simple Truths of Service as Inspired by Johnny the Bagger" co-authored with Ken Blanchard, for EVERY MANAGER in the world. They had to shut down the publishing company for a week in order to fill the order! What a joy it is to think that a little grocery bagger with Down Syndrome is impacting people all over the world, another precious example of the difference each one of us can make.

She will be presenting a breakout session at the national National Speakers Association conference in July titled "CARE Packages for the Home - Dozens of Ways to Regenerate Spirit Where You Live" based on her 1998 book.

NOTE: Barbara is working a new video demo tape and marketing materials, so if any of you are willing to send her a several sentence testimonial about the impact she has had on you and/or your organization, please email her at bglanz@barbaraglanz.com.

ARTICLE OF THE MONTH --"Taking Risks"
"Taking Risks"

Several weeks ago I was asked to speak to the Chamber of Commerce in Durango, Colorado. Since my mother, brother and sister live in Grand Junction, Colorado, I decided this was the perfect time to visit them and then to go on to Durango. Little did I realize that I would be experiencing so many new adventures in my life!

When I arrived in Grand Junction, my brother, Bruce Bauerle, who is a college professor at Mesa State University, asked if I wanted to go white water rafting on the Colorado River the next day. Since he teaches Survival courses, I thought he would be a good person to introduce me to a thrill I have always wanted to experience.

As we drove to Glenwood Springs where we would put into the water, he gave me many instructions, with the codecil that two people had recently drowned there doing the same thing that we were going to do! He told me never to stand up in the water if the boat overturned because my foot could get caught in a rock crevice and I would be trapped and pulled under. Then, he said if I couldn't get a hold on the boat, never to go to the outside of the river or I would be beaten up on the rocks. Needless to say, I approached the whole experience with some inner trepidation!

While I struggled into my borrowed wetsuit pants and jacket, Bruce blew up the boat which was called a "duck." While I thought we were going "rafting," instead we were attempting the rapids in a rubber blow-up boat just a bit larger than my two man sit-on-top kayak!

After all the preparations, we carried the duck down to the rapidly moving water and hopped in, Bruce telling me to paddle "like I was going to die" when we hit a rough spot! About two thirds of the way down, after some really exciting rides, he pointed to a natural hot spring area ahead on the right. He told me to grab a tree branch as we went by, and we would pull up the boat and soak for a few minutes in the hot springs and share a (not very cold) beer. So, trying not to dump the boat, I finally managed to grab a branch strong enough to hold us while Bruce skillfully navigated the duck to the edge of the fast moving river.

After we finally got it tied up, we had to climb over all kinds of rocks and boulders (remember the wetsuit that makes you feel like a robot) to get to the hot springs. I scraped my foot and my knee on the slick rocks but had to prove that I was NOT a citified wimp and I COULD DO IT ! ;-)

While there in a hot spring in the middle of the Colorado River, I amazingly found a penny on one of the rocks. Remembering a wonderful story I had just heard changed my whole feeling about the rest of the trip:

A friend told me that she had been going to dinner with a very wealthy client of hers, On the way into the restaurant, there was a penny on the ground and he stopped and picked it up. It bothered her a bit because she thought, "Why would this wealthy man take the time to pick up a penny?" Later in the evening, she decided to ask him that question. He replied, "What does it say on a penny?" She thought for a moment and answered, :"I think it says In God we trust. " He said, "Yes, it does. When I find a penny, I believe it is God reminding me that He is still in charge, and then I realize that I no longer have to worry about what lies ahead of me in my life."

That precious penny reminded me that whatever happened on the rest of that rafting trip was not up to me, so I completely relaxed and the rest of it was a pure delight.

Two days later I picked up a rental car to drive to Durango. Now when my husband was alive, he did all the driving and I slept, so just renting a car and going where I had never been before was taking a big new risk. I think in the back of my mind, I probably realized I would have to drive over a mountain, but little did I realize the magnitude of that drive! Everyone kept telling me how beautiful the drive was going to be, and since I had no other way to get to Durango, I gritted my teeth and took off for the four hour drive. What they later told me was that Red Mountain was about the worst mountain in Colorado to drive over because they have so much snow (there was still snow in MAY!) and so many avalanches that they cannot put guard rails on the road. So I navigated 10 MPH hairpin turns with thousands of foot drop-offs with NO GUARD RAILS for several hours.

Many of you will remember that I grew up in Iowa where we had guard rails when there was a five foot drop-off! Many times on my drive across the mountain there was not even room for a white line on the drop-off side - and this was supposed to be beautiful????? What I came to realize as I stopped several times at scenic views, mostly to revive my courage, was that it WOULD have been a beautiful drive if I HAD NOT BEEN DRIVING! However, I did make it safely to Durango and realized I had taken another risk and won.

The next day a person from the Tourism Bureau took me to visit Mesa Verde, the cliff dwellings that go back to 700 to 1200 BC. We had to climb log ladders, crawl through crevices, and climb rocks to get there and then realized that we had to do the same to get back up to the top again! It was absolutely fascinating to see how they lived, and I could only imagine how many two year olds or sleep walkers might have wandered over the cliffs to their deaths. So, another risk taken and another glorious experience.

Finally, we drove far out into the desert on Indian land in the middle of a sandstorm to find the Four Corners area, the only place in the United States where four states come together - Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. When we finally found the large monument, we walked up to a huge bronze plaque that read, "In 1899 Hubert Page laid the cornerstone where the four states come together." Hubert Page was my great grandfather! What a THRILL it was to be where he had surveyed so many years ago and to feel the heritage he has handed down to our family. As I scanned the horizon in the middle of the desert with sand blowing so hard it hurt, I realized the risk he had taken to perform this amazing task for the US government, and I was awed.

In thinking back about this trip, I have a certain pride that I, a middle-aged widow living comfortably on the Gulf of Mexico in a very cultured city, could stretch enough to fully experience some of the rather adventuresome joys that are offered by our world. I challenge each of you, my friends and clients, to try something new this summer. Take a risk and free yourself from your comfort zone - it truly makes one feel fully alive and connected to Godās spectacular world!

Baby Owen learning to walk!
IDEA OF THE MONTH: "Ideas for Creative Communication"
These sample ideas are excerpted from "180 Ways to Spread Contagious Enthusiasm" by Barbara Glanz, Walk the Talk Company, June 2006.

IDEAS FOR CREATIVE COMMUNICATION

1. Have a contest with employees -- "If my company/ department were a T-shirt, this is what it would say. . . . " Then have them actually design the shirt. Photograph or videotape the results.

2. Put a specially wrapped package of M & M's (or any other candy which might represent your company) in every package you ship out with a note saying, "We're glad you're our customer."

3. Add a quotation, graphic, cartoon, or seasonal reminder to memos and fax cover sheets. Make them fun and interesting to get peopleās attention!

Examples:

My fax cover sheet has my personal motto on it, "Spreading Contagious EnthusiasmTM" with my logo of a butterfly as well as a quotation from Margaret Mead: "Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. Indeed that's all who ever have."

Another client titles their fax cover sheet "Little Known Fax About..." and lists interesting things about their organization.

A retail client changes its fax cover sheet every week with the reminder, "Only ____ more weeks to shop for Christmas!"

4. Create a service guarantee for your work unit. For example, a suburban hospital says, "If you're not seen in our emergency room by a professional in 15 minutes, your visit is free!"

5. Post "Street" signs to name hallways in your building. Choose names which communicate your company's mission or values.

Example:

For an organization that values service, the names might be "Appreciation Avenue," "Loyalty Lane," "The Extra Mile," "Recovery Road," or "Positive Experience Parkway."

6. Think of something creative you could offer your customers as a "free" sample. The Savings Bank of Rockford, CT, gives its customers a dime taped on a foldover card that says, "Who says we don't give free samples?"

7. Start a cartoon collection by topic and by industry. Add these whenever you give a presentation but be sure to get permission if they are copyrighted. You may also use them as ideas to create your own cartoons.

8. Hold "grapevine" meetings of all employees at least once a month to enhance communication and get worries and concerns out in the open.

9. Make sure there is a Human level in your company newsletter. Include customer service stories, company legends, pictures of employees, personal and family events and successes, customer feedback, ideas and resources for personal growth, cartoons, graphics, quotes

10. Think of creative enhancements you can add to your product or service. Zanos Hair Designs gives complimentary neck and shoulder massages and one of the employees brings you your car when you get your nails done. Some bakeries give a free cookie to customer's children.
