May Your Holidays Overflow with Blessings!

Special note to my readers:
I have included below my annual Christmas letter to friends and family. Although it is a personal letter, I thought you might be interested in my travels this year and my family life. Here are several other important things that have occurred:
* My NEW VIDEO DEMO is up on the website at
www.barbaraglanz.com/action/video.php3
* My NEW SPEAKER BROCHURE is now available at
www.barbaraglanz.com/promotional/brochures.php3
* I just received this touching note from a person in Reno, NV, about "The Simple Truths of Appreciation" book which I thought you would enjoy:
"While waiting for an appointment with my physical therapist recently, I saw your book, ' The Simple Truths of Appreciation.' After reading your book, which aside from the Bible, is the most beautiful book I have ever read, I decided right away to order books for my family, special friends, and special clients.
My first response came last night when I received a phone call telling me how much she 'appreciated' the opportunity to read this astounding work. I fully expect she will be placing an order very soon, herself. I can't thank you enough for your gift to so many, and many more to follow."
That was a precious gift of Appreciation to me! Please, during this holiday season, take extra time to appreciate all those people who have blessed your life in special ways.
CHRISTMAS 2008
"We are each of us angels with only one wing and we can only fly by embracing each other. " Lucian de Crescenzo
As I think back upon this past year, I realize how very blessed I have been with safe travel and the building of relationships with both old friends and new. Although the travel was at times overwhelming (I had one period this fall of 38 flights in 8 weeks!), the rewards have been many, my business has flourished, and I have found great joy in my family, my friends, my work, and my life. I even went on every roller coaster in Disney World with my friend, Peter, in September! These were the highlights of the year:
* Christmas in Portland, OR*
Since I had just gotten back from an amazing trip to Egypt where I spoke three times, took a trip down the Nile, and traveled to Mt. Sinai, we had a delightful "Egyptian" Christmas. You will see in the collage pictures of all the costumes I brought back for everyone, and you can read a journal of the trip at www.barbaraglanz.com/blog.
* New Years in Grand Junction, CO*
My dear Irish friend from Belfast, Annie Gourley, experienced her first taste of Colorado when we visited my sister, Beth Bauerle, in Grand Junction for a few days. My brother, Bruce, took us skiing at Powderhorn, something I had not done for ten+ years, and I was thrilled to find that I still could manage a couple of the intermediate slopes! We had fun, too, shopping in my sister's store. My mother is 90 and in an Alzheimer's facility there.
* An "Around the World" trip in February/ March to India, Thailand, and Vietnam*
This trip was the hardest one I have ever had to pack for as I began with speaking events in Baltimore, Brainerd, MN, and Chicago, where it was VERY cold in February, and then on to speak in Cancun, Mexico, where it was very warm, and from there to receive an international HR award in Mumbai, India! Ironically, my friend, Nancy Cobb, and I stayed in the Taj Hotel for five days where there has been so much tragedy this week. The conference was a delightful example of "Bollywood" (they film more movies there than any other place in the world except Hollywood) with music, fireworks, and huge trophies, and I got wonderful affirmation from the audience of mostly men. We learned a lot about the culture of India and were touched by the dignity of work even when they are illiterate (especially delivering the lunches and the laundry area) as well as the element of hope in the bright colored, beautiful saris in even the most depressed slum areas. Again, you can read about this trip
in detail in my blog at
www.barbaraglanz.com.
We went on from there to spend 5 days with my brother, Brian Bauerle, in Chiang Mai, Thailand, at his new executive retreat center in the mountains. It is one of the most peaceful, beautiful places I have ever visited, and we loved the Thai people and the food. One of the highlights was a trip to one of the "Long Neck" villages and then on to the Masai Elephant Camp. They have even taught some of the elephants to paint, and each "artist" has a different style - amazing!
From there we traveled to Hanoi, Viet Nam. Although interesting, it is definitely a Communist city, terrible pollution (2 million people and 4 million motorcycles!), with a feeling of depression. We took an overnight cruise on Halong Bay and of course, LOVED the shopping in VN! Interestingly, all the prices were in US dollars. From Viet Nam, I flew to Los Angeles and Anaheim where I spoke twice, and then finally home.
*Visit from Gretchen, Randy, Owen and Simon (from Portland, OR) in March*
Owen, 3, and Simon, 1, adored the beach and the pool. Randy is a victim of the awful economy, so if you know anyone who needs website work, (he is a webmaster), he can be reached at randy@nosix.com. Gretchen is still a stay-at-home Mom and loving it.
*Harlan (Iowa) High school girlfriend's reunion in San Antonio, TX, in May*
We did some sightseeing, ate, reminisced, laughed, and felt like we were teenagers again! Then I had a lovely visit with my KU college roommate, Judy Ballard Ellsworth.
*Erin's graduation and fashion show in Portland, OR, in June*
This was a very special week, and Annie from Ireland and my friend, Sara Forsman, came with me to celebrate. Erin graduated from the Portland Art Institute, one of only two "with highest honors," and her senior collection was chosen for the finale of the huge fashion show at the Art Museum. This summer she was asked to audition for the reality show, "Project Runway," and is now working for the girl who won last season. We had time for family fun, a visit to some of the wineries in the area, and of course, shopping!
*My birthday celebration with girlfriends on a ranch in Montana over July 4th*
One of my clients, as a part of my speaking fee, gave me a week at her lovely ranch in Montana to celebrate my birthday. Seven girlfriends met there, and we had a wonderful time - went to an Indian Powwow, the buffalo reserve, Glacier National Park, ate at the Dairy Queen for lunch each day ;-), shared cooking the evening meal, watched movies, hiked, and had many laughs and LOTS of wine! We owe a big "thanks" to Mara!
*Visit to Long Island and the NSA convention in New York City in August*
I spent several wonderful days visiting Jeff and Re Strong who own two marinas in the LI area. We took their boat somewhere for dinner each night! Then I went to the National Speakers Association convention and saw five Broadway shows while I was there.
*A week in New York City with my friend, Peter Livingston, in September*
Peter grew up in NYC, so he had planned a wonderful tour - the Empire State Bldg., shopping on Fifth Ave (he even let me spend an hour in the American Girl doll store!), toured all the museums, saw "Jersey Boys," and the highlight was going to the 10th to the last baseball game in Yankee Stadium! (Peter is a HUGE Yankees fan....)
*Early Christmas 2008*
I leave Dec. 6 to spend time with my favorite aunt in CA, then will speak for a client in San Diego, and will spend Dec. 11 - 16 in Portland, OR. Garrett, Ashley, Gavin, 10, and Kinsey, almost 8, will come down for the weekend for an early Christmas, so everyone will be there, including Erin's new boyfriend, Spencer. Garrett is a manager with Microsoft in Seattle, and I have been able to visit them several times this year when I am anywhere in the Pacific NW. I always bring the children "interesting" gifts from my travels! Both Gavin and Kinsey love to read, play soccer, and both take piano lessons.
Interspersed with all these trips were about 60 speaking engagements and often extra days of visiting special friends while I was in the area, so it was my busiest year ever! I continue on the Boards of Ken Blanchard's foundation, Lead Like Jesus, and on the National Advisory Council for Guideposts and have made many wonderful friends in these ministries. I am so grateful for my family, the mission of my work, and my precious friends all over the world and hope our paths will cross in 2009. May God bless you with love, good health, and an appreciation for all the joys of this life.
Blessings,
Barbara
