WE HAVE A NEW BABY!
Simon was born in Portland, Oregon, September 1, 2007, 7 lbs., 10 ozs., 21 inches. He joined his big brother, Owen, who was two on August 2, 2007. I arrived the day Simon was born and spent the better part of two weeks in Portland, mostly helping with Owen...I have to say that working is LOTS easier! ;-) We had great fun making masks out of paper grocery bags, going for nature walks and to the park, playing "pretend", reading, and singing.
Simon was the brightest, wide-eyed newborn I have ever seen and gained one and a half pounds in the first two weeks! Gretchen had a rough time and had to have a C-section after 14 hours of labor, so she is having a long recovery time. I sure miss the little guys and will spend Christmas with them. I will be with my son and his family (Garrett, Ashley, Gavin, 9, and Kinsey, 6 1/2) in Seattle for Thanksgiving. How very BLESSED I feel to have little ones to cherish and spoil!
NEW MOVIE OF "THE SIMPLE TRUTHS OF APPRECIATION"
A 3 minute flash movie of the "Teacher Story" from "The Simple Truths of Appreciation" was released last week. You can get a copy of it in the back of the book for $19.95 or just the book itself for $15.95. You will love the movie and can preview it on my website, www.barbaraglanz.com/books.
BARBARA WILL BE IN EGYPT DECEMBER 1 - 15
I will make my first trip to Egypt December 1 -- a lifetime dream ever since I read the sequels about King Tut in "American Girl" magazine when I was in grade school in Iowa. My friend, Nancy Cobb from Illinois, will accompany me on the trip. We will explore Cairo the first day there and then from December 3 - 7 we will take a cruise down the Nile. I will speak for the American Chamber of Commerce on December 9 and then we will spend three days on Mt. Sinai, including a Bedouin night in the desert. What a thrill to finally see the Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, the Sphinx, and the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments! I will report about the trip on my blog, www.barbaraglanz.com/blog.

Are you looking for a creative, meaningful way to appreciate your employees and / or your customers this Thanksgiving?
SEND THEIR FAMILIES A COPY OF "THE SIMPLE TRUTHS OF APPRECIATION!"
This is my idea: I have a new book titled, "The Simple Truths of Appreciation - How Each of Us Can Choose to Make a Difference." There is so much negativity and cynicism all around us that people are wanting positives and hope and a focus on goodness. I find that everyone can seem to share what is going wrong but have difficulty coming up with what is going RIGHT, so we need to become more positive, grateful people focused on what is good in our lives.
The #2 thing people want from their jobs is "Full appreciation for the work they have done", yet 65% of the workers interviewed said they got NO appreciation for the good work they did all last year. Isn't that sad?
The other need we are seeing in the workplace is a desire for employees to have more connection between their families (home life) and their work life. When Baxter Labs did a worldwide study asking their employees, "What can we do to make it better for you?", the answer most received was that they wanted to be recognized as "whole human beings with a life outside of work." I am seeing this over and over in my work in corporate America.
Finally, new research from Gallup says that only 12- 15 % of our American workers are giving their very best to their jobs. 8 - 10 % are burned out, but that leaves 75 - 80% just doing enough to get by. I believe that is primarily because they do not feel a sense of purpose in the work they are doing and they do not feel valued by the company.
So, my idea would combine all these needs, and Thanksgiving is the perfect time to do this:
I would like to suggest that companies purchase copies of my book, The Simple Truths of Appreciation, and SEND THEM TO THEIR EMPLOYEES' HOMES AS A THANKSGIVING GIFT, thanking the families for sharing the employee with them and for all their sacrifices to help them do their very best work. I think it is a gesture neither the employee nor the family will ever forget.
The book is a short book with lots of beautiful pictures, and it is filled with stories, both personal and business, of people who are making a difference through appreciating others. Even non-readers are enjoying it, so it would be a book for the whole family.
Another idea is to also send it to all the organization's best customers to thank THEM for their business.
I am always trying to think of creative ways to encourage people that they CAN make a difference. This book, with some simple strategies of how to remember to appreciate people, like putting five pennies in one pocket at the beginning of the day and each time you appreciate someone, moving the pennies to the other pocket with the goal of not ending the day without having moved all five pennies, can help make this spirit of appreciation actionable. And that is what we need more of in this hurting world!

My pastor told a story this Sunday that really touched my heart. He said he was traveling on Delta from Atlanta to Sarasota, and although usually he is in the very back of the plane, this time his Boarding Pass said "Zone One." Being one of the first people on the plane, he got to do some wonderful people watching as others were coming on board.
He was in the third row of Coach, when soon a young man in uniform came in, stowed his pack in the overhead bin, and sat in the row ahead of him. Another young lady was seated in that row, and he was able to hear a bit of their conversation. The young man told her that he had just finished a tour in Iraq, was coming home on leave, and then would go back in several weeks.
As they were talking, a woman who had been seated in First Class, came back to the young man's row, introduced herself, and asked him for his Boarding Pass. A bit puzzled, he handed it to her, at which point she, in turn, handed hers to him. She said, "I would like to trade seats with you."
The young man immediately responded, "Oh, no, Ma'am, I couldn't do that."
She smiled a huge smile and said, "Oh, yes, you can, Soldier. It's an order!"
So, as everyone around wiped teary eyes, the young man reached up for his backpack and went up to sit in First Class.
Just a few moments later, he said another woman came out of First Class, went down the row to another young soldier and said, "I just want to thank you for serving our country. Would you please trade seats with me?"
And the end of the story is... that by the time that plane took off, EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN UNIFORM was sitting in First Class!
What a testimony this is to the difference each of us can make every single day in every single situation when we are in touch with our hearts! That one act started a chain of kindness that touched every single life on that plane that day.
How can YOU reach out to someone today to thank them for the difference they are making?

I have always been a reader and love to escape with a good book. For many years I have always had three kinds of books going at the same time -- one for my heart (a "fun" read, usually fiction), one for my soul (a spiritual book) and one for my business or life (anything non-fiction). Currently I am reading lots of books about Egypt -- travel books, a book on the Taj Mahal, "1000 Places to See Before You Die," and "Memoirs of Cleopatra," a delightful novel.
Here are some of my favorite new books from fellow speakers:
"CONVERSATIONS WITH BOBBY -- FROM FOSTER CHILD TO CORPORATE EXECUTIVE"--is an invitation for every reader to reflect on those childhood moments which shape the adult. Filled with 4 color art and an exquisite pan flute music cd--the $19.95 book can be ordered through the Child Welfare League of America--they will receive ALL proceeds when ordered through their website: www.cwla.org. The book is authored by my pal, Bob Danzig, former CEO of Hearst Newspapers and now a member of the Speakers Hall of Fame.
My friend and also a Speaker Hall of Fame member, Eileen McDargh, has written a new book called "GIFTS FROM THE MOUNTAIN -- SIMPLE TRUTHS FOR LIFE'S COMPLEXITIES." Whether you are a world-weary worker juggling the demands of a hectic life or a seeker of soul-satisfying experiences, this deceptively simple book is your key to refresh, renew, rethink and recharge. Inspired by the challenges of backpacking through the Sierras, you will discover metaphors for understanding the mundane and the magnificent, the difficult and the delightful, the ordinary and the extraordinary in our 24/7 world. Join this walk in the wilderness to discover fresh perspectives, practical practices.and laugh-out-loud-joy in the process. To order, go to www.eileenmcdargh.com.
SILENT ALARM is a parable of hope for busy professionals. Set in the context of fiction, it is a story that rings true for most all of us.? While classified as a "self-help" book, this powerful story is truly a business book designed to create a wake-up call in corporate America... by igniting a substantive turning point for the leaders and managers who run it.? For some, it is a message of inspiration - and for others, a wake-up call for their very survival.? For everyone - it is an experience you won't soon forget!! This book is written by my dear friend, John Blumberg, and you can order it at www.keynoteconcepts.com.
